It has a very predominate open grain pattern. The more porous areas of grain take stain darker than the surrounding wood, accentuating the grain pattern. Unlike Oak, it as a very non-porous, closed grain wood. It takes stain evenly, with minimal grain showing. Maple is a good choice when you want a more uniform color and smooth finish.
